Resolutions from the 50th Annual AIR/IAB General Assembly
The Asociación Internacional de Radiodifusión / International Association of Broadcasting (AIR/IAB) held its 50th General Assembly in Brazil on November 4th, 2025.
AIR/IAB member countries resolved to send a clear signal about the future of radio and television in the region, adopting a package of resolutions that, when taken together, outline a common agenda for defending media freedom, safeguarding broadcast spectrum and ensuring that trusted broadcasters remain central in an increasingly digital, data-driven ecosystem.
Defending media freedom and journalist safety
Several resolutions focus on the protection of independent journalism under authoritarian pressure, as well as the climate of hostility and violence faced by journalists and media workers. They denounce censorship, legal and administrative harassment, physical attacks and impunity, and call on national governments and international organisations to treat independent media and pluralistic information as non-negotiable pillars of democracy in the Americas.
Protecting spectrum for free-to-air broadcasting
The Assembly also underscores that radio spectrum is not just another tradable asset, but the essential infrastructure that makes universal, free-to-air radio and television possible. The resolutions warn against regulatory and market changes that could restrict broadcasters’ access to frequencies or use digital transitions to limit free broadcasting services, and call for policies that recognise broadcasting as a public good delivering verified information, culture and entertainment to all.
Navigating sustainability, disinformation and AI
Looking ahead, IAB addresses the structural challenges of economic sustainability in the platform era, the spread of disinformation and the rapid rise of artificial intelligence. The resolutions reaffirm the “resilience, relevance and legacy” of radio and television, urge fairer competitive conditions with global platforms, and position trusted broadcasters as leaders in the ethical, transparent use of AI, including clear labelling of AI-generated or significantly modified content.
For the World Broadcasting Unions, this package of resolutions reflects concerns shared across all regions: safety of journalists, spectrum as critical infrastructure, sustainable business models and responsible innovation. It is a strong statement that broadcasters in the Americas intend not only to defend their role, but to actively shape the media environment their audiences will rely on in the years ahead.
