As the situation between Russia and Ukraine escalates, access to trusted, factual, and impartial information is more critical than ever. All media broadcasters and the World Broadcasting Unions’ members are focused on doing our job for the public in difficult circumstances and we will not hesitate to condemn any infringements or violations of press freedom. It is vital for journalists to be allowed to continue to operate both freely and safely, and report without hindrance. The World Broadcasting Unions (WBU) strongly endorses the “Call to Action on Emergency Alerting”, which supports the implementation of the international standard alerting format Common Alerting Protocol (CAP). Broadcasters play an essential role in communicating the key facts of an emergency, mindful that everyone in harm’s way must understand what is happening and what actions to take. At their annual meeting, the World Broadcasting Unions (WBU) called for concerted efforts to combat threats and violence against journalists and other media professionals which constitute an attack on democracy. The safety of journalists and other media professionals has deteriorated over recent years and the COVID-19 pandemic has aggravated the situation in many countries. NABA and WBU members partner with Trusted News Initiative (TNI) to alert each other to disinformation which poses an immediate threat to life so content can be reviewed promptly by platforms, whilst publishers ensure they don’t unwittingly republish dangerous falsehoods. The TNI is already working together to tackle to spread of harmful coronavirus disinformation and previously has had success running a rapid alert system during the UK 2019 General Election, Myanmar and Taiwan 2020 General Elections and the US Presidential Election.
